| Canmore Alberta is situated in the Bow Valley. It is a very beautiful
area with tall mountains and sparkling rivers running through the area.
One of the most famous natural landmarks that Canmore is known for is the
"Three Sisters" - this is a set of three mountain peaks (known
as Big Sister, Middle Sister, and Little Sister) - all of which are between
2,694 metres and 2,936 metres. Canmore is very close to Banff National Park,
so you can imagine that Canmore has a pretty decent tourism base!
Canmore is also located in a great spot in relation to the big cities.
Calgary is just down the road about an hour and a half away.
Although Canmore has only about 12,000 people living there full time,
it is still considered one of the larger towns in Alberta. In a love/hate
way, Canmore is growing. The good being that whenever a town or area grows,
you can bet that the economy is pretty solid. New jobs are formed, and
unemployment can drop. However, there are concerns over this urban growth.
Many people worry that since Canmore is located in a pristine natural
environment that growth could cause environmental damage and problems.
Much of the new development is taking place in the Three Sisters Mountain
Village. SilverTip Resort is also experiencing growth and you can usually
see some new building happening in and around the town centre.
Canmore has a reputation for being a difficult place to find affordable
and decent housing - especially for pet owners. This housing crunch can
be felt even more during the busy tourist seasons. During these times,
the town sees an influx of seasonal employees, and housing them all can
be a challenge. Wapiti Tents is a community campground that can hold about
200 people. Many of the summer workers make this their first stopover
before looking for more traditional housing. Canmore has something called
the PAH - perpetually affordable housing - that residents can apply for.
It is apparently housing that is affordable, but there is a waiting list
to be considered. From their town web site, you can find out about any
PAH updates. They'll tell you things like " Coyote Ridge is one unit
away from being sold out, so if you are looking for one of those units
you should contact the CCHC office (609-9983) as soon as possible. Possession
dates are scheduled for the month of April 2007." A subtle reminder
of how tight housing is in Canmore is on the PAH page too. They say "
Remember, in order to get the best possible choice of PAH homes both now
and in the future, you need to get on the PAH Waiting List as soon as
possible. APPLY NOW!"
With multi-million dollar vacation homes dotting the area, housing prices
are certainly higher here than in many other areas of Alberta.
