As I usually do for any city on the site, I try to find out what the city
or town is about and what would make someone want to live there. Most often,
I try to find some photos of the town to give me an idea of what it is really
like.
I came across some great photos of Airdrie, and the first impression I got
was "flat." There was a fellow who took a great aerial photo of
Airdrie and it looks like a medium sized town surrounded by lots of prairie
and farmland. A first impression which I wasn't sure painted the complete
picture.
Next, I found a pretty good Wiki article about Airdrie and the area. I was
surprised to find out that it is a bit bigger than I thought it was. Close
to 30,000 people live here, which really surprised me. The nice thing too
is that it is really close to Calgary, and it is a member community of the
Calgary Regional Partnership. Airdrie has been experiencing a growth boom
since it is so close to Calgary and offers more and differing housing options
for folks who may be experiencing a difficult time finding a home or apartment
in the big city. Incidentally, at the time of this writing, the bigger cities
in Alberta are experiencing an almost 0% vacancy rate for rentals - thus
making Airdrie a good option for folks looking to move to the area. Airdrie
is also very accessible since it is situated on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway
- the most used highway in Alberta. Airdrie also has an airport (the Airdrie
Airport), but if you want to book a regularly scheduled flight on a prominent
airline, most people choose to use the Calgary International Airport.
Airdrie is also noted as being a very business-friendly and economically
positive environment. In 2002 the town won the Economic Development Award.
Airdrie also frequently wins the "Communities in Bloom" award
which is a is a Canadian beautification program. It means that the town
works on being pretty, and has a lot of civic pride. These are good things
for people living in and moving to Airdrie. A town that 'takes care of
itself' is likely to experience healthy growth and good property values.
I found many other photos of Airdrie (I'll hopefully be able to post
them on this page) that indicates that this town is very family friendly.
There are quaint neighbourhoods with ranch-style homes, and community
stores and markets throughout. There seems to be a real "main street"
feel in town and a sense of security. Again, these are impressions, but
I would venture to say that I am probably correct on them.
Speaking of Neighbourhoods, Airdrie has a few "named" sections
of town. Bayside (in the southwest part of town), Coopers Crossing, Gateway
and Ironwood Station are a few. Others include Kings Heights, Luxstone,
Morningside, Prairie Springs, Reunion, Sagewood and Sierra Springs.
Woodside is a great area of town that has the Woodside Golf Course. canals
is just south of Woodside and is near the Monklands Soccer Park. Both
of these neighborhoods are adjacent to the Downtown area. Willow Brook
is located just north of Downtown Airdrie and borders the Airdrie BMX
and Fletcher park. On the other side of these parks (to the west) you'll
be in the Sunridge and Old Town neighbourhoods, and further to the east
you'll be in the Jensen section of town which has several schools including
Airdrie Middle School, Edwards Elementary, and George McDougall High.
Airdrie Meadows is another neighbourhood just south of Oldtown, and just
to the south of that you'll find Edgewater and Ridgegate, which boasts
some great open space and trails. Big Springs, Thorburn and Meadowbrook
are all in the southeast part of Airdrie. Each of these areas have schools,
parks, and decent proximity to East Lake, and East Lake park. This area
is great for families, and has several parks and sporting facilities |

| Apartment Rental and Property Management
Tidbits - When considering a new rental, the most important element
is most often location. A rental that is far from where you work can end up costing
quite a bit of cash in terms of commuting costs. Think about the cost/benefit
of where you are considering, and also if it seems to be near shops and establishments
that you frequent. Being close to family and friends might also be a consideration. |
