About Winnipeg:

Winnipeg is an important city. Besides being the largest city in Manitoba, it is also the capital. Winnipeg plays a key role in many areas important to Canada as a whole - transportation, finance, education, employment, agriculture, and much more. Winnipeg has a population of approximately 700,000 people. It ranks as the eighth most populous city in Canada. It is located at the confluence of the Assiniboine River and Red River.

Winnipeg is a destination for recreational enthusiasts. Those who enjoy water sports have an abundance of lakes to choose from in the area. Lake Manitoba is a massive lake that is home to a profitable fishing industry, as well as some great ice fishing in the winter.

If you are looking for cultural outlets in Winnipeg, you shouldn't be disappointed. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada's oldest ballet company and the longest continually operating ballet in North America. You can imagine that with that kind of history, they should be pretty good!

Winnipeg can have beautiful weather during the spring, and summertime is usually warm, but a bit on the humid side. Be prepared for winter, though! Wintertime here has been known to be cold, long, and snowy. The town has a wonderful informal nickname - Winterpeg.

Winnipeg Neighbourhoods:

Winnipeg has a great number of named neighbourhoods. There is a great map here to see the approximate locations of the different Winnipeg neighbourhoods.

In general, in the north of the city, there is Seven Oaks West and East bordered by Inkster West and East. To the Southeast, there are the neighbourhoods of River View East and West, and then to the far east of town is the popular neighbourhood of Transcona.

Just north of downtown Winnipeg (which hosts 'Downtown East and West') are the Point Douglas North and South neighbourhoods. Just directly to the east of downtown is the St. Boniface West and East sections (East is much larger). Heading to the south of Downtown, there is River Heights West and East, and then to the direct west of downtown you'll find St. James Assiniboia East and West. To the south of these two you'll be in the Assiniboine South neighbourhood.

The southern section of town has the Fort Garry north and south neighbourhoods and the St. Vital north and south neighbourhoods.
