Grande Prairie Rentals

In northwestern Alberta, Grande Prairie is really the only 'game in town.' Located on highway 43, Grande Prairie is one of Canada's fastest growing cities. As of 2006, there were just over 47,000 people living here. The town serves as a "hub" and service centre for many of the outlying residents and smaller towns. Clairmont is just to the north, as well as Sexsmith. To the west, there is Wembley and Beaverlodge. To the south, Grovedale, and to the east is Bezanson. Bear Lake is to the northwest about 10 km. Grande Prairie is (at the moment) Alberta's 7th largest city.

Grande Prairie is about 465 km from Edmonton. There is quite a bit of farmland around the area, and to the south there is forest land with aspen, pine, and spruce. The Canadian Rockies are to the southwest of the city. One some really clear days, you may be fortunate to catch a glimpse of a few of the higher peaks.

Weather-wise in Grande Prairie, you would expect fairly cold winters with bouts of snow, and summertime is generally warm with fairly cool nights. The Chinook winds can cause some gusty days here in Grande Prairie.

Grande Prairie has a growing economy that is fed largely by the oil and gas industry. Agriculture and farming also play a large hand here as well. Interestingly, technology is gaining a share of the local economy here in recent years. Another interesting tidbit is that there is no provincial sales tax in Grande Prairie, so people come here to shop from miles around. Retail shops and malls are often quite busy in Grande Prairie.

Grande Prairie also has an airport located just to the west of town and has regular flights from many of the other major provincial cities. It also serves smaller communities as well. The terminal was built in 1981.

Grande Prairie has several schools to note. Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) is a post-secondary school located in town. There are two high schools here Grande Prairie Composite High School and Peace Wapiti Academy serves high school.

So what do people do here for fun? There are a number of golf courses and public parks that keep the residents here active. The Dunes Golf Course is located to the south of town. There are quite a few nice places to bike (Muskoseepi Park along Bear Creek) and there are swimming facilities here as well. There is also quite a burgeoning music scene in Grande Prairie. This may be due to the large percentage of young folks that live here. In the winter, people participate in cross country skiing, and other winter sports. There is a local ski venue here called Nitehawk.

Grande Prairie's main daily newspaper is the Daily Herald-Tribune.
