A Scam – The Dialogue from Start to Finish

I am posting this lengthy dialogue between someone who has been kind enough to share it with me, and a scammer – This was from Craigslist, but I am posting it here anyways – I have removed the property listers e-mail and identifying information, but have left the scammer’s stuff in there, so hopefully it will help anyone to avoid this scammer down the road.

Another chapter to add, today the owner of the suite received a bank draft
for $4000 drawn on the BOM. To be honest not sure what the next step should
be, I haven’t checked with the RCMP but as far as I can see no Canadian has
yet been broken so I’d be surprised if the get involved. I can fax you a
copy of the cheque if you like. Help! G

This rental posting was posted by myself on behalf of a friend who is
not computer literate).

The following letters are posted chronologically beginning with the
Craig’s list ad that we posted, all communications from the scammers
are in red. The last letter is a beauty. I was quite lucky to get a
hit on the net as Google doesn’t give you anything unless you put
Andre Whiff in quotations.

I was born in and raised in Europe 28 yrs ago and pretty much moved
around Europe half of my life until my parents decided to settle in
England where I live now. I’m a matured, Vivacious, career driven
individual. I don’t smoke and drink on very sparse occasions (probably
won’t even consume up to 5 liters in year) which might be buoyed
something very special like a job promotion or maybe a best
friend’s wedding (lol).

I should be arriving late January but I don’t mind taking the place
right away. I plan on staying in Canada for at least 3 years minimum
So I should be able to sign a year contract there is need for it.
I would be working as a Network Administrator. Where is the nearest

My employer will be sending you payment for the first and last month
rent and also my shipper will be shipping my Honda 2009 model and
other personal effects before I move into your place.I wont be
bringing much over as I intend to buy most afresh there. But my PC
will be coming with me surely & other personal belongings.If this is

I will be off to see my sick mum in the hospital who is due for

*I must say I was very surprised to get a reply from outside the local
area, somewhere in the province perhaps but a reply from the UK was a
bit of a jolt. I have no problem to rent the suite to you under the
terms you mention with the one addition of a refundable damage deposit
equal to half a month’s rent ($275). That would make the total amount
$550 (Feb), $550 (last month’s rent) plus the above mentioned damage
deposit of $275 for a total of $1375. I will waive the January portion
of the rent. I have no need for a year lease or otherwise as the suite
can be rented very quickly given the location near Simon Fraser
University, a simple month’s notice will be fine. In so far as the
damage deposit is concerned BC rental regulations stipulate that if
the premises are left as they were found the renter is entitled to a
full refund plus interest. I will have you sign the standard BC rental
contract which basically lays down the terms and conditions of our
agreement. Unfortunately I do not have a specified parking stall for
your car however there are numerous visitor spots available within the
complex all reasonably close to the suite. I will send some stills and
even a short video of the area and Google maps can easily locate the
complex if you enter ……… Drive, Burnaby, BC in satellite
view. I might be able to communicate via Skype however I’m using my
friend’s computer as mine is down and will have to clear Skype use

  5. Same Jamie letter answering our ad on Vancouver island, he even sent us the same poem. When the cheque arrives I’m sending it to the RCMP with the link to this page. Thanks for this page and thanks to my hubby for researching this “Jamie” guy and saving my 80 year old parents a lot of grief.

    The unimaginable thing I feared most has happened to me.My mother
    passed away yesterday night. I am the most distraught person on planet
    earth but there is need for me to gather mental, physical and spiritual
    strength at this trying moment.
    My mother is the catalyst behind all my present achievements and I
    have been 500% dependent on her for more future support.Why did she
    have to go? Arrangements are being made and she will be laid to rest
    on Sunday.
    I told my employer(Mary House) about the news and she has given her
    condolences.Also she told me to have patience with the payment(National
    Bank Draft) as it was sent via canadapost regular mail.
    She made a mistake of sending Andre’s(shipper) money along with yours
    instead of sending it separately.What do we do about that? Please
    advise.

  6. My story (including the letters) is identical except for the name – Derick Smith instead of Jamie Lee. Thanks so much for the alert. I feel very stupid and very lucky right this monent. Can I assume the bank draft is fake? Anyway – I still have a room for rent in Calgary :)

  9. OMG!! This guy is just gruesome.. I got the same poem as posted above and the guy used the death of his “mum” to get me going. Also, when I said I was going to keep the draft until he arrived he stepped up the pressure to send cash.

  11. I just went through this whole thing and i started to get suspicious when after the mom dieing i tried to respond and the email had been disconected. so i googled the email. Im not sure how it works, but im guess he is going to ask me to send the difference to his shipper and he will give me the full check hahaha. Right.

    Well this is going to be fun for the next few weeks as i get back at this son of a #*$(%#$ for wasting my time and possibly leaving my place unrented.

  12. I’ve also been exposed to this scammer. No, I have not sent him any money; but I made it my mission to take him down. What he is doing is absolutely sick and HE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET AWAY WITH THIS. The worst part is – this is most certainly not the only scam he conducts.

    I have already started compiling a comprehensive report with all the information: email correspondence, the fraudulent cheque and the envelope, phone records, plus everything I could find online about this scam. I took this report down to the Police and they opened a file. Unfortunately, they said that there is not enough information at this point, but they could launch a proper investigation given the right circumstances.

    My plan now is to collaborate with Google, Skype, Western Union, Canada Post, Craigslist and my bank in order to obtain as much information about this scammer as possible and help track him down. In the meantime, I also plan to start reporting any information I have to other agencies such as Recol, IC3, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

    I need you to help me. With more people and evidence, this issue will have much more weight – companies will be more willing to collaborate and law enforcement will have more reason to investigate. And most importantly, together we can aggregate the critical mass of information that will finally break him down.

    LET’S PUT AN END TO THIS TOGETHER! If you have any information at all about this scam, please send me an email to stop.the.rent.scammer at gmail.com and we can go from there. ANYTHING is sufficient, even if it’s just a confirmation that you had contact with this crook. You will not regret doing your part to prevent this criminal from hurting more people.

I sent the money back already however prior to sending the money and his cheque was ok and money went to my account my bank keeps telling me that his check was ok and i should not worry. How is it possible for his money to come to my account? Is it going to bounce one day? And how long does it take for his cheque to bounce? I don’t understand it please help! He did pick up the money I sent to him through western union…. Do u know is it me that’s going to be responsible one day if his check somehow bounce down the road even though my bank approved the funds… Or is this my banks fault since they told me funds were ok and that’s a reason I sent the money back???

    I received and deposited the bank draft yesterday. I don’t expect it to clear after reading about this scam.

  21. I just received identical emails to some of your emails. This guy is now going by Wiley Alan and is using the Crossbow and 1 year contract to try and suck you in. I started searching him on facebook to see who he was and nothing came up. The email seemed strangely worded so I decided to look it up and found this conversation. I have not emailed him back and will not do so.

  22. Glad I came across this website. I even talked to this guy! He was a bit weird, seemed like a scammer to me. I was wondering why someone would give me so many details about his private life!! so I asked that he give me a Montreal contact to check out his employment story. Have yet to hear back from him. New alias ‘Wiley Alan’ and he does set up his mom being in the hospital. All I could think is if your mom is in the hospital why do you want to move here?
    There is no Crossbow tech office here.
    Decided to google his name, glad to learn he is a scammer.

  23. I received the same standarized text from Mr. Wiley Alan. You’d think the guy would make at least a draft e-mail that didn’t have bad grammar!
    At first I thought this guy was a bit weird telling me so much personal info. I seriously did not want to know about his mother and thought it was weird to accept an overseas employment contract when your mother is sick.
    I send him picks, we spoke on the phone and he wanted me to send a cheque ASAP. Hold your horses! You need to fill out an application, pass a credit cheque and, since you are from overseas, we will have to contact your local employer to verify your story as there are too many scammers out there. Never heard back from him after that message! I came across this site as I was looking for Crossbow Technologies Montreal’s number or something stating Mr. Wiley worked for them as it is a legit company.
    The moral of the story: never be afraid to ask for references and verify them. You also have to make sure to get references from a local number as the scammer can easily ask one of his or her friends to provide a reference.

    I’m from Windsor Ontario and got the Wiley Alan experience too in response to a Craigslist ad for a room I have for rent. He called me a few times as well. The second time he called he began crying uncontrollably and said he would call me back. Never did, bank draft was bogus. I sent him no money. I will help nail this jerk in any way I can. Please let me know how I can help.

  30. Wiley Alan contacted me through the coast magazine in Halifax on Nov 7 by email with the identical cover letter. Thanks for posting these warnings.

    Another scammer called Dr. Gail Abrahamson contacted me thru Craigs list & has been trying to send me cheques etc.

I think I just might be calling this guy up on skype tonight and give him a piece of my mind. makes me sick this guy can get away with it. My dad is calling RCMP in the morning.     Hi everyone! Well, guess what…me too! Only my “renter” was called Wiley Alan and the shipper was Jonathan Muller

    What a sick individual he is. I went through exactly the same as the rest of you, shipping, poem, surgery, death, cheque, the lot. I didn’t send money though thank goodness. I have the cheque here which just arrived, so fedex should be made aware too. He called me 6 times from the UK. I have his number on my cel phone! I can pass it on if it helps? It is from the UK so at least it seems likely he’s really there. Also, his accent is real; I’d be able to tell if it was fake as I am English and immigrated here, using shipping etc which is what gave me my 1st red flag. What an idiot I am! I felt really bad for him when his “Mum died”… How low can you be to use that kind of thing? He has literally hounded me by telephone and has e-mailed me 17 times. He also has fake facebook and skype accounts. I can give you those too! I’m happy to pass all this on, but am not sure how to get the details to anyone. I live in Pemberton, BC by the way and my rental advert was on the Whistler Craigslist website. I’m posting a scam alert there when I have finished this If anyone wants to get in touch with me, please reply to my scam ad. It will be in the rental section.

I advertised in the pique newsletter, and also vancouver sun, so looks like he is probably scanning all rental ads. Thankfully I googled Ad store consumer electronics, and this link came up.
    I have not responded as I don’t have the energy for someone like this.

    Same letter, I figured him for a scam right away and told him I needed a bank draft in CAD for the exact amount of the deposit and the exact street address of his employer. Claims he is with the Ad Store which does not have a location in Vancouver. He seems very attached to his computer and his bike is now a 2010 model, but poor Mom is still on here death bed, despite dying a few times. I will try reporting this to the VPD and Craigslist but I doubt either will take much interest

  64. I just got the full deal from this guy as well. Only his name was Wiley Povost, and shipper Adam Finley. First part that tipped me off was the the shipper had a G-mail account. Odd I’m just a low blow employee and I still got a company.com email.

    Needless to say, no money for Wiley yet again. Hopefully he goes bankrupt sending everything FedEx.

  66. I have encountered this guy too! He goes by Chris Miller at the moment. His shipper is Finley Adams. I just received the check yesterday, and noticed that he called me twice. Good thing I didn’t answer, I guess he would have put on the water works for me, since his “mum died”.   67. Yup, still at it but now targeting Vancouver Island. This time he claims to be Wiley Donovan from the UK. Same bad english for a brit, same poem and same scam.

    UPS says they have money for me. If the bank cashes it should I go for it? After all he’s wasted enough of my time.

    Can someone explain to me exactly how his scam works, because having read all the above, it appears he sends out real money orders first and then attempts to scam people to send it back.

    I’m confused as to exactly how he comes out ahead.
